Drawing Cutting Edge Comics

Why is it a bad book ? It's written by a well know author who wrote many how to draw guides , printed in color on good paper and was published by the Watson-Guptill that is known for its quality titles yet it proved to be a total rip off .

The reason lies with its promising title and the back cover self promotion , I was expecting to get "inside" tips and techniques from pro artists complete with penciling , inking and coloring tutorials that show at least how the splashy cover was created ( once again I learn never to judge a book by its cover ) and more useful information aimed for advanced artists who want to improve their art .

Instead , this book contains very basic anatomy , missing much important information and cover briefly subjects like head , limbs and body , the pages them self are full of samples with very little text that does not help much . There are many samples that are just thrown in , i.e. the head section has a page full of drawn heads , is that suppose to make you draw heads better ?

The back cover claims to "Explain cutting edge inking and coloring techniques .." , the fact is that the short inking section is composed from samples showing a pencil image and then the finished inks , no steps , no tutorial , not even an explanation what tools were used .. Same thing for the coloring section , you can learn just the same by looking at 2.50$ store comics .

Some page layout tips were pretty useful with the wrong layout and the right one and some comic tips like exaggerated facial expression with samples but it is hardly worthwhile to buy a book just for that . Another section deals with perspective ( again samples without accompany text does not necessary help much ) , reasons to get an agent ( I thought you need to draw well first ) and some tips and pointers scattered around .

144 pages is considered a thin book but even that is more then needed to contain the information with in , so the pages are full with big repeating samples that teach you nothing and large text titles , 2 page spread begin each section to "waste" more pages that could hold informative text instead . It is like someone had to fill the allocated space yet he didn't have anything useful to say , so there is a blunt section with finished art of characters like warlock , ninja etc. and a weird section dealing with converting comics to animation ( let me check the title again .. no it is still " cutting edge COMICS " ) .

This book is by no mean a way to learn how draw cutting edge comics or any other comics for that matter Stay away from this useless book > Drawing Cutting Edge Comics at Amazon.com .
