How to Avoid Popups |
|
Ironically this section is located in my sitewhich has one of the most annoying popup ever . I explain repeatedly that it comes from the FREE hosting server and it is the only way to keep this site alive and free for the thousands of visitors each month . But it does not mean you have to put up with it or any other pop up . Turn off your javascript It is the simplest method and most effective , while it may hinder slightly your browsing capabilities in Java intensive sites it is also a good way to enhance security and defend against other "evil" small programs ( like the one that changes your homepage without your permission or add bookmarks ) . Use a popup killer application ( or just press alt + F4 ) The other option is to download a small utility that terminates those popups automatically thusreleasing you from the need to do so manually , some of this programs are really enhanced and you can even determine from which site you want to accept popups ( like retailers who use popups to inform of new deals and coupons ) : Naviscope - What I currently use , it blocks popup and banners , light to download and easy to use , very configurable and has some other nice features like pre fetching KillAD - ( Pop up remover | size 42kb | OS : Win9X , WinNT ) NoAds - ( Pop up remover | size 192kb | OS : Win9X ) Panicware's Pop-Up Stopper - ( Pop up remover | size 420KB | OS : Win9X , NT , XP ) AdSubstract - ( Banner remover | size 2.4mb | OS : Win? ) AtGuard - ( Personal firewall , cookies and popup blocker ) Recommended by Ray Blanchard . There are many moreutilities for this purpose , listed above are the smallest and easiest to download , if you know of other ( and not just for windows ) please let me know but make sure they are small ( Multi mega bytes utility just for closing popups is way over the limit ) . It is Recommended to use one before you browse the links section and always check it with an updated anti- virus program before installing . Other security issues One more thing for closure , I sometimes use old version browsers for surfing unknown sites , since scheming "evil" webmasters design most of their tricks to work on newer version of Explorer sometimes surfing their site with another older browser ( like Netscape 3 ) lets you bypass all the traps . |
